Testimonials from some volunteers

Jackie

Thank you for introducing me to Janet; we have a lovely time although she sometimes forgets I am coming. I had no problems with Janet’s memory loss and I have found an inner patience and understanding I was unaware I had.

Barbara

I really enjoy visiting and feel for a short while I can focus on helping someone to forget their isolation and have some contact from the outside world.

Volunteer befrienders are supported to visit people in their own homes on a regular basis, offering friendship and companionship, in turn helping to achieve realistic goals, raise self-esteem and build confidence.

If you are interested in volunteering, you can contact us initially by phone or by downloading the initial enquiry form here and emailing it to us. Our administrator will contact you for a few more details.

You will then be contacted by our Befriending Service staff who will explain a little more about the volunteer role and invite you to attend a new volunteer induction session.  You will be asked to complete an application form, provide two referees and also complete a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) application.

Assuming your references and DBS are satisfactory, we will arrange for you to meet your new friend.  On average we suggest visits once a week for approximately one to two hours, but we appreciate that this may vary depending on your availability.  We try as much as possible to keep you with the same member so that the friendship can flourish and grow.

All of this and more will be explained at your volunteer induction.

The befriending staff will provide ongoing support so you never feel you are alone.  We also have a wonderful group of other volunteers who are happy to support you.  We offer ongoing information sessions to all our volunteers.
