Interested in Volunteering?
A Befriender is a volunteer who is willing to visit one of our members, usually within the member’s own home to provide company and friendship. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. If you can say yes to the following, please read on.
- Can you spare 1 -2 hours per week or fortnight?
- Do you have good listening and communication skills?
- Do you posses a good sense of commitment?
- Can you empathise with the needs of our members?
If you are interested in volunteering, you can contact us initially by phone or by downloading the initial enquiry form here and emailing it to us. Our administrator will contact you for a few more details.
You will then be contacted by our Befriending Service staff who will explain a little more about the volunteer role and invite you to attend a new volunteer induction session. You will be asked to complete an application form, provide two referees and also complete a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) application.
Assuming your references and DBS are satisfactory, we will arrange for you to meet your new friend. On average we suggest visits once a week for approximately one to two hours, but we appreciate that this may vary depending on your availability. We try as much as possible to keep you with the same member so that the friendship can flourish and grow.
All of this and more will be explained at your volunteer induction.
The befriending staff will provide ongoing support so you never feel you are alone. We also have a wonderful group of other volunteers who are happy to support you. We offer ongoing information sessions to all our volunteers.
